In 2023, Assemblymember Devon Mathis (R-Visalia), working with PSW, introduced AB 248, known as the Dignity for All Act. This legislation aimed to eliminate outdated and offensive terminology such as “mentally retarded” and “handicapped” from California’s laws, replacing them with respectful terms like “individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities.” The bill was signed into law on October 13, 2023, and became effective on January 1, 2024. This change reflects a commitment to dignity and respect for individuals with I/DD.
