Growing in Confidence, Independence, and Community Connection
Paul is a proud Porterville native with deep family roots and a strong sense of community. Raised alongside two sisters and a brother, his close-knit family has always played a meaningful role in his life. After graduating from Monache High School, Paul continued his educational journey at Porterville College and Taft College, fueled by a desire to learn, grow, and build a future of independence.
In 2003, Paul took a major step forward by joining PSW’s Independent Living Program (ILP). With support from ILP, the Central Valley Regional Center (CVRC), and his family, Paul achieved a significant milestone: living on his own for the first time. This new chapter marked more than just a change of address; it was the beginning of a journey toward greater self-sufficiency, personal responsibility, and lasting confidence.
With determination and steady encouragement, Paul embraced the skills and opportunities that came his way. He also became a participant in PSW’s Supported Employment Program (SEP), where he works side-by-side with a job coach who offers tailored guidance, on-the-job training, and continued support. This partnership has helped Paul thrive in his role at Porterville Target, where he is a respected and valued member of the team.
Paul’s story is a celebration of perseverance, support, and the power of community. His journey reflects the heart of PSW’s mission: to create pathways to independence through compassion, opportunity, and collaboration. With every step forward, Paul shows what’s possible when people are empowered to pursue their goals and live life with purpose.
