Success Story: Isaac

From Quiet Beginnings to Shining Confidence

Isaac L. began his journey with PSW’s Adult Skills Center (ASC) in November 2021, during a time of uncertainty and adaptation. With in-person services paused due to COVID-19, Isaac initially engaged through Alternative Services, including weekly staff check-ins, activity packets delivered to his home, and interactive Zoom sessions. Among the many virtual offerings, Isaac especially enjoyed the cooking and art classes, which allowed him to express his creativity and stay connected.

A lifelong resident of Porterville, Isaac lives with his sister Rocio and shares a close bond with all of his siblings, Ana, Nathaniel, and Enoch. Faith and family are central to Isaac’s life. He loves dressing up to attend church and often travels to Mexico with his family, enjoying time together and exploring new places. A true fan of sports and style, Isaac proudly supports the 49ers and American soccer, and he’s rarely seen without his signature cowboy hat, boots, and belt.

In March 2022, Isaac transitioned into traditional in-person services at ASC. At first, he was a shy and quiet young man, working through challenges in communication and self-expression. But with steady encouragement and meaningful goals, Isaac began to blossom. His initial objectives included writing his name, counting to 20, and learning simple household chores like wiping down the table after lunch.

Isaac approached each task with enthusiasm. Over time, he became a reliable and helpful presence in the program, always ready to assist both staff and peers. He even took on the important job of sorting recyclables, proudly organizing bags for the recycling bin. His commitment and pride in his responsibilities are clear, he genuinely hates to miss a day at program.

Today, Isaac has transformed into a confident and social young man who brings energy and joy to those around him. He’s especially beloved at our weekly Tuesday afternoon dances, where he loves to sing for his peers and light up the room with his enthusiasm. His friendly, outgoing personality has made him a favorite among staff and participants alike.

Isaac’s story is a true reflection of what can be achieved through support, connection, and a belief in one’s potential. He is living proof that growth comes in many forms, and that with community and care, every step forward is worth celebrating.

Keep shining, Isaac — we’re proud of all that you’ve accomplished and excited for everything that lies ahead!
