Success Story: Ricky

A Journey of Progress, Perseverance, and Positivity

When Richard “Ricky” Dugan joined PSW’s Behavior Management Program in November 2013, he faced significant challenges. Transitioning from the ASC Program, Ricky was experiencing consistent behavioral difficulties, including verbal outbursts, refusal to participate in self-care, and difficulties interacting with male staff and peers. Recognizing his needs, Ricky’s support team knew the Behavior Management Program could offer the tailored, compassionate guidance he needed to succeed.

In the beginning, the adjustment was not easy. Ricky found the transition to a new environment difficult. He resisted communication, declined to complete tasks, and often acted out. But through patience, consistency, and trust-building, PSW staff slowly began to break through. With positive reinforcement, redirection techniques, and hands-on role-playing of calming strategies, Ricky started to make meaningful progress.

Over the past 11 years, Ricky’s path has been full of growth, with both highs and challenges. Yet at every stage, his resilience has shone through, and he’s always found a way to move forward with the support of a dedicated team who believe in him. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he received Alternative Services from home, Ricky continued to demonstrate strength. And when in-person services resumed in June 2021, his joy at reuniting with his peers and staff was immediate and heartwarming.

Since his return, Ricky has shown major strides in independence. He’s improved his mobility, taken greater ownership of his self-care routines, and expanded his communication skills. He now speaks and socializes more freely, engaging with staff, peers, and his community with growing confidence. While he occasionally needs reminders (especially when it comes to face masks), his overall commitment to PSW’s health and safety protocols has been impressive.

Ricky has also found stability and happiness at home. Since November 2013, he has lived at Rico Home, where he enjoys being near his sister Kathy, who also resides in a Rico home. Their continued connection has been a source of joy and strength for both of them.

Outside of program hours, Ricky’s interests bring him even more joy. He loves music, is a big fan of wrestling, and looks forward to Fridays, his favorite day of the week, when he gets to enjoy lunch from a local restaurant. A delicious hamburger is always his top pick!

Watching Ricky grow into a more independent, expressive, and joyful young man has been a gift. Each day, he continues to make strides, and every small victory brings smiles to the faces of those around him. Ricky reminds us why we do what we do, because every step forward, no matter how small, is worth celebrating.

Great job, Ricky — we’re proud to walk this journey with you!
