We would like to take this opportunity to recognize the tremendous job our new basketball coaches have done this year with the Special Olympics Basketball team, the Road Runners. Coaches Susan Duran, Rick Carrillo, LeeAnna Walker-Maddox, Ariani Pena, and Destiny M. eagerly stepped into their roles, taking on responsibilities that included practices and tournament preparation. Although only one coach had been involved with the team prior to this season, together they brought exactly what the program needed most—enthusiasm, compassion, creativity, team spirit, community involvement, and most importantly, FUN.

One particularly impactful idea was arranging for the team to attend a Porterville High School basketball game. This not only energized the team for practices but also demonstrated how easily and meaningfully community connections can be built. Additionally, the team had the opportunity to practice regularly on an indoor court at Monache High School and take team photos prior to their tournament in Clovis. The high school coach went above and beyond by gifting each athlete a drinking cup and a basketball to take home—an experience our team members will not soon forget.

We cannot say enough positive things about the improvements and innovative ideas introduced this season. These efforts significantly enhanced team spirit and camaraderie, while also helping to present our team to the community not as individuals with disabilities, but as athletes. That distinction is powerful and meaningful.

We are incredibly proud of and grateful for all of our coaches whose dedication and leadership breathed new life into the program.
